Radial Growth Promotion

Radial growth promotion is the enhancement of an organism’s increase in width or girth, especially in plant stems and roots. In plants, the vascular cambium and cork cambium divide and produce secondary xylem, secondary phloem, and protective tissues; hormone signals, nutrient availability, and environmental conditions regulate the rate and direction of this activity. Studying radial growth promotion helps explain plant development, water and nutrient transport, stem strengthening, and responses to stress. Measuring changes in diameter can support forestry management, crop improvement, and experiments evaluating growth-promoting treatments.

Flue gas from power plants is a cheap CO2 source for algal growth. We have built prototype "flue gas to algal cultivation" systems and described how to scale up the algal cultivation process. We have demonstrated the use of a mass-transfer bio-reaction model to simulate and to design the optimal operation of flue gas for the growth of Chlorella sp. in algal photo-bioreactors.

Evaluating Motor Impairment in C. elegans Models Using the Radial Locomotion Assay

This video demonstrates the use of a radial locomotion assay to evaluate motor dysfunction in C. elegans expressing either wild-type or ALS-mutant human TDP-43 protein. Worms with varying levels of wild-type or mutant TDP-43 expression are allowed to crawl, and their movement is measured by the radial distance traveled from the central point on the assay plate. The assay distinguishes between mild, moderate, and severe motor impairments based on the distance traveled by the different C. elegans...

Plant Promoter Analysis: Identification and Characterization of Root Nodule Specific Promoter in the Common Bean

Promoter expression analyses are crucial to improving the understanding of gene regulation and the spatiotemporal expression of target genes. Herein we present a protocol to identify, isolate, and clone a plant promoter. Further, we describe the characterization of the nodule-specific promoter in the common bean hairy roots.

Radial System Protection

2024

Radial systems employ time-delay overcurrent relays to reduce load interruptions. When a fault occurs, the nearest breaker opens first, while upstream breakers remain closed due to longer delay settings. This approach ensures minimal disruption to the rest of the system. In a radial system with a fault downstream of the third breaker, ideally, only the third breaker will open, isolating the fault and interrupting the load connected beyond it. The second breaker has a longer delay setting,...

The Eukaryotic Promoter Region

2020

The eukaryotic promoter region is a segment of DNA located upstream of a gene. It contains an RNA polymerase binding site, a transcription start site, and several cis-regulatory sequences. The proximal promoter region is located in the vicinity of the gene and has cis-regulatory sequences and the core promoter. The core promoter is the binding site for RNA polymerase and is usually located between -35 and +35 nucleotides from the transcription start site. The distal promoter regions are...
