Reaction Volume Determination

Reaction volume determination is the process of calculating the total and individual liquid volumes required to prepare a biological reaction accurately and reproducibly. It uses the desired final volume, reagent concentrations, stock solutions, dilution factors, and reaction composition to determine how much of each component to combine, often applying the relationship C1V1 = C2V2. Accurate volume calculations help maintain appropriate concentrations, buffer conditions, enzyme or substrate levels, and sample input in assays such as PCR, enzymatic reactions, and cell-based experiments. Reliable preparation reduces pipetting errors, improves experimental consistency, and supports meaningful comparison across biological replicates.

Determining Order of Reaction

Rate laws describe the relationship between the rate of a chemical reaction and the concentration of its reactants. In a rate law, the rate constant k and the reaction orders are determined experimentally by observing how the rate of reaction changes as the concentrations of the reactants are changed. A common experimental approach to the determination of rate laws is the method of initial rates. This method involves measuring reaction rates for multiple experimental trials carried out using...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams — SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry All chemical reactions have a specific rate defining the progress of reactants going to products. This rate can be influenced by temperature, concentration, and the physical properties of the reactants. The rate also includes the intermediates and transition states that are formed but are neither the reactant nor the product. The rate law defines the role of each reactant in a reaction and can be used to...

Determination of Impingement Forces on a Flat Plate with the Control Volume Method

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate forces on bodies as the result of changes in the linear momentum of the flow around them using a control volume formulation [1, 2]. The control volume analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a differential...

Constant Volume Calorimetry

Calorimeters are useful to determine the heat released or absorbed by a chemical reaction. Coffee cup calorimeters are designed to operate at constant (atmospheric) pressure and are convenient to measure heat flow (or enthalpy change) accompanying processes that occur in solution at constant pressure. A different type of calorimeter that operates at constant volume, colloquially known as a bomb calorimeter, is used to measure the energy produced by reactions that yield large amounts of heat and...
