Replication Rate Measurement

Replication rate measurement is the quantitative assessment of how quickly biological material, such as DNA, cells, or viruses, increases over time. Researchers collect measurements at defined time points and calculate changes in copy number, cell abundance, or synthesis activity, often by fitting time-course data to a growth or replication model. Depending on the system, assays may track DNA synthesis, cell counts, fluorescence, or sequence abundance under controlled conditions. These measurements reveal differences in proliferation, replication dynamics, and responses to environmental changes or treatments, supporting studies of cell biology, microbial growth, viral infection, genome stability, and drug development.

Measuring Reaction Rates

Polarimetry finds application in chemical kinetics to measure the concentration and reaction kinetics of optically active substances during a chemical reaction. Optically active substances have the capability of rotating the plane of polarization of linearly polarized light passing through them—a feature called optical rotation. Optical activity is attributed to the molecular structure of substances. Normal monochromatic light is unpolarized and possesses oscillations of the electrical field in...

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...

Metabolic disorders are among one of the most common diseases in humans. The genetically tractable model organism D. melanogaster can be used to identify novel genes that regulate metabolism. This paper describes a relatively simple method which allows studying the metabolic rate in flies by measuring their CO2 production.
