Sexual Dimorphism

Sexual dimorphism is the occurrence of consistent differences in morphology, physiology, behavior, or life-history traits between sexes of the same species, beyond differences in reproductive anatomy. These differences arise through interactions among sex chromosomes, hormone signaling, gene regulation, development, and environmental conditions; for example, androgen- or estrogen-responsive pathways can produce sex-specific growth, coloration, or reproductive behavior. In biology, studying sexual dimorphism helps explain mate choice, competition, adaptation, and population dynamics across organisms. It also informs biomedical research by revealing sex-linked variation in disease risk, drug responses, physiology, and the design of more representative experiments.

Sexual Selection and Mate Choice - Concepts

Choosing Mates Evolutionary fitness is largely determined by the ability of an organism to survive and successfully produce offspring. Critical to this process is sexual selection, which plays a large role in the determination of mating pairs, and thus which genes are passed on to the next generation. Often, intense competition for mates within a population places selective pressure on traits related to courtship and copulation. Natural selection that results from these pressures is called...

Sexual Selection Class Simulation ExpandNote: In this activity, you and your classmates will portray a sexually reproducing population consisting of an equal number of male and female animals. You will simulate several different mating scenarios to determine how relative quality, attractiveness, sex, and parental commitment affect mate choice and reproductive success. The goal of this activity is to maximize your progeny. Hypotheses: There are several overall hypotheses for female and male...

A straight-forward set of methods to isolate and determine the identity of the most abundant proteins expressed in skeletal muscle. About 800 spots are discerned on a two-dimensional gel from 10 mg muscle; this allows for the determination of gender-specific protein expression. These methods will give equivalent results in most tissues.
