Vitamin A Deficiency

Vitamin A deficiency is a nutritional disorder in which insufficient vitamin A impairs vision, immune defense, and maintenance of epithelial tissues, making it an important topic in biology and public health. Vitamin A-derived retinoids regulate gene expression and form retinal, a light-sensitive component of visual pigments; inadequate supply disrupts dark adaptation and tissue function. Early signs can include night blindness and dry eyes, while severe deficiency may cause xerophthalmia and increase susceptibility to infection. Studying its causes and effects supports dietary assessment, supplementation, food fortification, and strategies to reduce preventable illness, particularly among children and pregnant individuals.

We describe the production and characterization of nanoparticles and microparticles composed of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) using vitamin E-TPGS as an emulsifier. By varying formulation parameters such as the concentration of emulsifier, it is possible to produce nanoparticles with mean diameters ranging from 220 nm to 1.98 µm.

Vitamins, derived from the Latin word for life, are essential organic substances required in small quantities for optimal growth and overall well-being. Unlike other organic nutrients, vitamins don't act as sources of energy or building materials but rather facilitate these nutrients' utilization by the body. Vitamins are predominantly coenzymes, assisting enzymes in specific chemical actions, like the oxidation of glucose for energy involving B vitamins. Most vitamins are not produced in our...

Reduced/absent expression of Pms2 and/or ERCC1 in entire crypts is a frequent event within 10 cm on each side of colonic adenocarcinomas, likely the basis of a field defect with high mutability and progression to cancer. Deficiency in Ku86 or CcOI is much less frequent in these field defects.
