Electrospraying Technique

Electrospraying is a technique that uses an electric field to convert a liquid into fine, charged droplets or particles, enabling controlled fabrication of drug-delivery materials and coatings. When high voltage is applied between a needle and a collector, electrostatic forces overcome surface tension at the liquid meniscus, forming a Taylor cone; the resulting jet breaks into droplets as solvent evaporates, leaving solid particles. In cancer research, electrospraying can encapsulate chemotherapeutic agents, proteins, or other bioactive compounds in polymeric micro- or nanoparticles, supporting localized delivery, protection of therapeutic cargo, and controlled release. These capabilities aid the development of targeted treatments and combination therapies.

A mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) source operated at atmospheric pressure was developed by coupling mid-infrared laser desorption and electrospray post-ionization. Exogenous ice matrix was used as the energy-absorbing matrix to facilitate resonant desorption of tissue-related material. This manuscript provides a step-by-step protocol for performing IR-MALDESI MSI of whole-body neonatal mouse.

We describe a new quantitative lipidomics method for identifying numerous lipid species in yeast using survey-scan electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI/MS). This method exceeds currently available methods for lipid identification and quantification in the ability to resolve various molecular forms of lipids, sensitivity, and speed.
