Transgenic Zebrafish Larvae

Transgenic zebrafish larvae are early-life-stage zebrafish engineered to carry an introduced gene, making them useful vertebrate models for studying gene function and disease. In cancer research, tissue-specific promoters can drive oncogene expression or fluorescent reporters, allowing tumor cells, blood vessels, or immune responses to be visualized in living larvae with microscopy. Their small size, rapid development, and optical transparency support efficient analysis of tumor initiation, growth, invasion, metastasis, and responses to candidate treatments. These models connect genetic mechanisms with observable cancer phenotypes and can help prioritize compounds or pathways for further investigation in more complex systems.

We present a novel method for microgavage of larval zebrafish utilizing standard embryo microinjection and stereomicroscopy equipment. We demonstrate that microgavage is a safe and efficient technique useful for delivering controlled amounts of diverse materials specifically into the larval zebrafish intestinal lumen.

The video demonstrates a zebrafish wounding and entrapment device technique for observing fluorescently labeled fungal pathogen infection in zebrafish larvae. Initial infection attracts macrophages, and as infection persists, neutrophil recruitment progresses at the injection site.

Inducing Neuroinflammation in Zebrafish Larvae with a Lipopolysaccharide Injection

2025

The video demonstrates the microinjection of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) into the brains of zebrafish larvae to induce neuroinflammation. The larvae are positioned on an agarose-lined dish, the needle is inserted into the brain ventricles, and the LPS is injected. The injected LPS triggers an immune response that leads to neuroinflammation.
