Acid Proton Abstraction

Acid proton abstraction is the removal of a hydrogen ion, or proton, from an acid by a base, producing the acid’s conjugate base. In a Brønsted–Lowry acid–base reaction, the base uses a lone pair of electrons to bond to the proton while the electrons from the acid’s hydrogen bond remain on the acid, forming a new anion or neutral species. The extent of abstraction depends on factors such as acid–base strength, solvent, and the stability of the conjugate base. This process is central to reaction mechanisms, buffer systems, organic synthesis, and the control of molecular reactivity in chemistry.

Effects of Thinking Abstractly or Concretely on Self-control

2023

Source: Diego Reinero & Jay Van Bavel—New York University Whether it's refraining from having a second serving of ice cream, studying instead of attending a fun party, or deciding to put money away in a savings account, sacrificing short-term outcomes in favor of long-term outcomes (i.e., delaying gratification) is a central tenant of self-control. When people apply self control, they engage numerous psychological processes to help them achieve their goal. These self-regulatory processes...

Radical Formation: Abstraction

2023

The electron of an atom can be abstracted from a compound by a relatively unstable radical to generate a new radical of relatively greater stability. For example, an initiator which forms radicals by homolysis can abstract a suitable species like a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom from a compound to generate a new radical. This ability of radicals to propagate by abstraction is a crucial feature of radical chain reactions. Even though homolysis produces radicals, it is different from radical...

Acid Suppressive Drugs for Peptic Ulcer Disease: Proton Pump Inhibitors

2024

Peptic ulcers, often induced by H. pylori infections or NSAID usage, arise from disruptions in the delicate balance of gastric acid production. Peptic ulcers stem from heightened gastric acid levels due to H. pylori infections or NSAID use. The protective mucus layer diminishes in the presence of these factors, allowing gastric acid to erode the stomach lining and form ulcers. Gastric acid, a potent cocktail of hydrogen and chloride ions, is produced in specialized parietal cells within the...

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University The United States consumes a large amount of energy – the current rate is around 97.5 quadrillion BTUs annually. The vast majority (90%) of this energy comes from non-renewable fuel sources. This energy is used for electricity (39%), transportation (28%), industry (22%), and residential/commercial use (11%). As the world has a limited supply of these non-renewable sources, the United States (among others) is...

Task Interruption and Resumption Paradigm for Testing the Activation and Pursuit of an Abstract Thinking Goal

2017

This protocol was designed to test the activation and pursuit of cognitive goals (e.g., an abstract thinking goal) using the task interruption and resumption paradigm. The protocol is suitable for cognitive goals that are automatically pursued once activated, as the distraction procedure prevents goal pursuit during the interruption period.
