Beta Carbon

Beta carbon is the carbon atom located two positions from a reference functional group or reaction center, typically separated from it by an alpha carbon, and this designation helps describe molecular structure and reactivity. In organic reactions, a beta carbon often bears a beta hydrogen that can be removed together with a leaving group on the neighboring alpha carbon; this concerted or stepwise beta-elimination process forms a carbon–carbon double bond. Identifying beta carbons supports systematic nomenclature and helps predict elimination products, alkene formation, stereochemical outcomes, and reaction mechanisms in organic and biological chemistry.

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...

The Carbon Cycle

2019

Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle. Biological Carbon Cycle All...

Herein we report a tailored HPLC purification protocol that yields high-purity amyloid beta 42 (Aβ42) and amyloid beta 40 (Aβ40) peptides, capable of oligomer formation. Amyloid beta is a highly aggregation prone, hydrophobic peptide implicated in Alzheimer's disease. The amyloidogenic nature of the peptide makes its purification a challenge.

Evaluating Mutation Frequency in Bacteria Using the Beta-Glucosidase Assay

Source: Stefan, A., et al. The Multifaceted Benefits of Protein Co-expression in Escherichia coli. J. Vis. Exp. (96), (2015).This video demonstrates the evaluation of mutation frequency in bacteria using a beta-glucosidase assay. Bacterial cultures expressing a proofreading-deficient DNA polymerase are collected over successive generations. Replication errors caused by reduced proofreading may activate a suppressed beta-glucosidase gene. After centrifugation and permeabilization, a substrate is...
