Femtosecond Laser Pulses

Femtosecond laser pulses are bursts of light that last only a few quadrillionths of a second, enabling scientists to examine molecular events on their natural timescales. Their extreme temporal compression produces high peak intensities, which can drive nonlinear optical processes such as multiphoton absorption while time-resolved measurements track excited states, bond rearrangements, and energy transfer. In chemistry, these pulses initiate and probe ultrafast photochemical reactions, reveal transient intermediates, and support precision spectroscopy and microscale material processing. By linking electronic excitation to structural change, they help clarify reaction mechanisms and guide the design of photocatalysts, molecular devices, and advanced materials.

LIBS detection capabilities on soil simulants were tested using a range of pulse energies and timing parameters. Calibration curves were used to determine detection limits and sensitivities for different parameters. Generally, the results showed that there was not a significant reduction in detection capabilities using lower pulse energies and non-gated detection.
