Freestanding Nanomembranes

Freestanding nanomembranes are ultrathin, nanoscale films that maintain their structure after release from a supporting substrate, combining low thickness with mechanical flexibility and a high surface-to-volume ratio. They are commonly produced by depositing a functional layer on a sacrificial substrate or interlayer, selectively removing that support through chemical etching or dissolution, and transferring the liberated membrane to a new environment. In chemistry, these structures provide tunable platforms for selective separation, catalysis, sensing, and electrochemical devices, where nanoscale transport and abundant accessible surfaces can improve responsiveness and material efficiency. Their composition, porosity, and strain also enable systematic control of chemical and physical behavior.

In this paper we describe the interfacial synthesis of conjugated microporous polymers (CMP) on sacrificial substrates, and the dissolution of the substrate for the preparation of freestanding CMP nanomembranes. In addition, we will describe how the fragile nanomembranes can be transferred to other substrates.

We describe a method for the fabrication of large-area (up to 13 cm diameter) and ultrathin (as thin as 8 nm) polymer films. Instead of using a sacrificial interlayer to delaminate the film from its substrate, we use a self-limiting surface treatment suitable for arbitrarily large areas.
