N-pentane

N-pentane is a straight-chain alkane with the molecular formula C5H12, and it serves as a useful model for relating molecular structure to physical properties in chemistry. Its five carbon atoms form an unbranched chain surrounded by hydrogen atoms; because the molecule is nonpolar, its molecules interact mainly through London dispersion forces, while complete combustion produces carbon dioxide and water. N-pentane is used as a reference compound and solvent in laboratory and industrial settings, and its volatility makes it relevant to evaporation, distillation, and flammability studies. Comparing it with branched pentane isomers also demonstrates how structure influences boiling point and molecular packing.

Comparing Intermolecular Forces: Melting Point, Boiling Point, and Miscibility

2020

Intermolecular forces are attractive forces that exist between molecules. They dictate several bulk properties, such as melting points, boiling points, and solubilities (miscibilities) of substances. Molar mass, molecular shape, and polarity affect the strength of different intermolecular forces, which influence the magnitude of physical properties across a family of molecules. Temporary attractive forces like dispersion are present in all molecules, whether they are polar or nonpolar. They...
