Selective Reducing Agents

Selective reducing agents are chemical reagents that convert particular functional groups to lower oxidation states while leaving other reducible groups largely unchanged, enabling controlled synthesis. Their selectivity arises from differences in reagent reactivity, steric and electronic interactions, solvent, temperature, and reaction conditions, which govern electron or hydride transfer to a target substrate. In organic chemistry, these reagents help reduce aldehydes, ketones, alkenes, or other functional groups without disrupting sensitive bonds elsewhere in a molecule. Choosing an appropriate reducing agent improves chemoselectivity, limits protecting-group steps and side reactions, and supports efficient preparation of pharmaceuticals, materials, and complex natural products.

Source: Vy M. Dong and Daniel Kim, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Controlling the reactivity and selectivity during the synthesis of a molecule is very important criteria for chemists. This has led to the development of many reagents that allow chemists to pick and choose reagents suitable for a given task. Quite often, a balance between reactivity and selectivity needs to be achieved. This experiment will use IR spectroscopy to monitor the reaction and to...

Redox Titration: Other Oxidizing and Reducing Agents

2024

Besides iodine, other oxidizing or reducing agents can serve as titrants in redox titrations. Common oxidizing titrants include KMnO4, cerium(IV), and K2Cr2O7. The choice of oxidizing titrants depends on factors like stability, cost, analyte strength, and reaction rate between the analyte and titrant. KMnO4 is a strong oxidizing titrant that reduces from Mn(VII) to Mn(II) in a highly acidic solution, simultaneously oxidizing the analyte to a higher oxidation state. In this case, KMnO4 acts as a...

Aptamers are short ribo-/deoxyribo-oligonucleotides selected by in-vitro evolution methods based on affinity for a specific target. Aptamers are molecular recognition tools with versatile therapeutic, diagnostic, and research applications. We demonstrate methods for selection of aptamers for amyloid β-protein, the causative agent of Alzheimer's disease.

This protocol describes the preparation and characterization of a dendrimeric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent that carries cyclen-based macrocyclic chelates coordinating paramagnetic gadolinium ions. In a series of MRI experiments in vitro, this agent produced an amplified MRI signal when compared to the commercially available monomeric analogue.
