Silver Mirror Test

The Silver Mirror Test is a qualitative chemical assay used to identify aldehydes by observing their ability to produce a reflective coating of metallic silver. In the reaction, an aldehyde reduces diamminesilver(I) ions in Tollens’ reagent to silver metal while being oxidized to a carboxylate under alkaline conditions; the deposited silver forms a mirror on the inside of a clean glass vessel. This test helps distinguish aldehydes from most ketones and illustrates oxidation-reduction chemistry, complex-ion behavior, and metal deposition. It remains a useful instructional experiment and a foundation for understanding functional-group analysis in organic chemistry.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Colloquially, the terms learning and memory encompass a broad range of behaviors and mental systems, everything from learning to tie a shoe to mastering calculus (and a lot in between). Experimental psychologists have divided up learning mechanisms into groups that seem to have different properties, and that seem to rely on different brain systems. A major division is between declarative and non-declarative memory, roughly, the...

We developed a real-time mirror robot system for functional recovery of hemiplegic arms using automatic control technology, conducted a clinical study on healthy subjects, and determined tasks through feedback from rehabilitation doctors. This simple mirror robot can be applied effectively to occupational therapy in stroke patients with a hemiplegic arm.

Femtosecond-laser direct-writing is frequently used to create three-dimensional (3D) patterns in polymers and glasses. However, patterning metals in 3D remains a challenge. We describe a method for fabricating silver nanostructures embedded inside a polymer matrix using a femtosecond laser centered at 800 nm.
