System Surroundings

System surroundings are the parts of the universe outside a defined chemical system, considered together with that system when analyzing changes in matter and energy. A boundary separates the system from its surroundings and may allow energy, matter, or both to cross, distinguishing open, closed, and isolated systems; heat transfer and work alter the system’s internal energy. This framework supports thermodynamic analysis of chemical reactions, phase changes, and equilibrium by tracking energy exchange and determining whether processes are exothermic or endothermic. Understanding system surroundings helps researchers predict reaction behavior and design controlled experiments, industrial processes, and energy-efficient technologies.

Thermodynamics studies the relationship between heat, work, temperature, and energy. A key concept in this field is a "system," the macroscopic part of the universe under observation. Systems can interact with their surroundings, leading to three types: open, closed, and isolated systems.Open systems permit the exchange of both matter and energy with their surroundings, like a boiling pot of water. In contrast, closed systems only allow the transfer of energy, restricting the movement of matter...

Here we present a histological method for capturing, labeling, optically clearing, and imaging the intact brain tissue interface around chronically implanted microdevices in rodent brain tissue. Results from the techniques comprising this method are useful for understanding the impact of various penetrating brain-implants on their surrounding tissue.
