Toluene

Toluene is an aromatic hydrocarbon consisting of a benzene ring bonded to a methyl group, and it serves as an important solvent, fuel component, and chemical feedstock. Its delocalized π-electron system stabilizes the ring while the methyl group activates it toward electrophilic aromatic substitution, directing incoming substituents mainly to the ortho and para positions. Toluene can also undergo side-chain oxidation to form benzoic acid derivatives and participate in industrial reactions that produce materials such as polyurethane precursors, dyes, and explosives. In chemistry, studying toluene connects molecular structure with reactivity, solvent behavior, manufacturing, and the need for careful control of volatile organic compound exposure.

The activity of the inducible lysine decarboxylase is monitored by reacting the substrate L-lysine and the product cadaverine with 2,4,6-trinitrobenzensulfonic acid to form adducts that have differential solubility in toluene.

Ideal Solutions

According to Raoult’s law, the partial vapor pressure of a solvent in a solution is equal or identical to the vapor pressure of the pure solvent multiplied by its mole fraction in the solution. However, Raoult's Law is only valid for ideal solutions. For a solution to be ideal, the solvent-solute interaction must be just as strong as a solvent-solvent or solute-solute interaction. This suggests that both the solute and the solvent would use the same amount of energy to escape to the vapor phase...

Photochemical Initiation Of Radical Polymerization Reactions

Source: David C. Powers, Tamara M. Powers, Texas A&M In this video, we will carry out the photochemically initiated polymerization of styrene to generate polystyrene, which is an important commodity plastic. We will learn the fundamentals of photochemistry and use simple photochemistry to initiate radical polymerization reactions. Specifically, in this module we will examine the photochemistry of benzoyl peroxide and its role as a photo-initiator of styrene polymerization reactions. In the...

The Synthesis, Characterization and Reactivity of a Series of Ruthenium N-triphosPh Complexes

Ruthenium phosphine complexes are widely used for homogeneous catalytic reactions such as hydrogenations. The synthesis of a series of novel tridentate ruthenium complexes bearing the N-triphos ligand N(CH2PPh2)3 is reported. Additionally, the stoichiometric reaction of a dihydride Ru–N-triphos complex with levulinic acid is described.
