Assessment Priorities

Assessment priorities are the ordered clinical evaluations used to identify immediate threats to a patient’s life, function, or safety and determine which findings require prompt action. Clinicians typically begin with an organized assessment of airway, breathing, circulation, neurological status, and overall exposure, while responding first to abnormalities that could rapidly worsen. This prioritization supports triage, focused history-taking, physical examination, monitoring, and timely intervention across acute and routine care. Applying assessment priorities helps teams recognize deterioration, allocate attention and resources effectively, communicate urgent findings, and build safe, evidence-informed decisions for diagnosis and ongoing management.
