Health Promotion

Health promotion is the process of enabling individuals and communities to improve health by increasing control over the factors that influence well-being. It works through coordinated strategies such as health education, behavior-change support, preventive services, and the development of social and physical environments that make healthy choices more achievable. In clinical practice, health promotion complements diagnosis and treatment by addressing modifiable risk factors, supporting vaccination and screening, strengthening self-management, and helping prevent disease complications. Its application can improve population health, reduce health disparities, and guide patient-centered care across primary care, hospitals, and community settings.

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

2023

The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health. The agent-host-environment model states that disease results from...

Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...

A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model. The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

The Eukaryotic Promoter Region

2020

The eukaryotic promoter region is a segment of DNA located upstream of a gene. It contains an RNA polymerase binding site, a transcription start site, and several cis-regulatory sequences. The proximal promoter region is located in the vicinity of the gene and has cis-regulatory sequences and the core promoter. The core promoter is the binding site for RNA polymerase and is usually located between -35 and +35 nucleotides from the transcription start site. The distal promoter regions are...

Promoter expression analyses are crucial to improving the understanding of gene regulation and the spatiotemporal expression of target genes. Herein we present a protocol to identify, isolate, and clone a plant promoter. Further, we describe the characterization of the nodule-specific promoter in the common bean hairy roots.
