Annealing Process

Annealing is a heat-treatment process that changes a material’s microstructure to adjust properties such as hardness, strength, ductility, and internal stress, making it important in manufacturing and materials engineering. In a typical metal annealing cycle, the workpiece is heated to a specified temperature, held long enough for diffusion and recrystallization or phase transformation to occur, and then cooled at a controlled rate, often slowly in a furnace. This process can soften metals for forming, restore ductility after cold working, reduce residual stresses, and improve dimensional stability. Engineers select the temperature and cooling schedule according to composition, prior processing, and desired performance.

Oxide materials show many exotic properties that can be controlled by tuning the oxygen content. Here, we demonstrate the tuning of oxygen content in oxides by varying the pulsed laser deposition parameters and by performing postannealing. As an example, electronic properties of SrTiO3-based heterostructures are tuned by growth modifications and annealing.
