Chronic Health Conditions

Chronic health conditions are long-lasting diseases or impairments that often require ongoing management and can affect an individual’s function, quality of life, and risk of complications. They develop through persistent biological processes, such as inflammation, tissue degeneration, metabolic disruption, or altered organ function, rather than a short-term response that resolves quickly. In engineering, this topic guides the design of diagnostic tools, wearable sensors, assistive devices, drug-delivery systems, and patient-specific models that monitor disease and support treatment. These technologies can improve early detection, personalize care, reduce treatment burdens, and help researchers evaluate interventions for conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic respiratory disorders.

The unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) protocol is a validated method for studying behavioral and physiological changes associated with chronic stress and depressive symptoms. Eight weeks of imposition of the UCMS protocol induces behavioral changes and poor health outcomes in rodents of either gender.

We describe a protocol to measure transmigration by monocytes across human endothelial monolayers and their subsequent maturation into foam cells. This provides a versatile method to assess the atherogenic properties of monocytes isolated from people with different disease conditions and to evaluate factors in blood which may enhance this propensity.
