Custom Ultrasound Imaging Probe

A custom ultrasound imaging probe is a purpose-built device that generates and detects high-frequency sound waves to form images of internal structures, with its design tailored to a specific engineering or biomedical task. Piezoelectric elements convert electrical pulses into acoustic waves, transmit them through a coupling medium, and convert returning echoes back into electrical signals; timing and amplitude differences are then processed into an image. Engineers adjust probe frequency, element arrangement, geometry, and focusing to balance resolution, penetration depth, and field of view. Custom probes support nondestructive testing, materials characterization, surgical guidance, and specialized imaging where standard transducers cannot meet performance or access requirements.

The development of new ultrasound (US) probes based on Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducer (CMUT) technology requires an early realistic assessment of imaging capabilities. We describe a repeatable experimental protocol for US image acquisition and comparison with magnetic resonance images, using an ex vivo bovine brain as an imaging target.

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.

This video demonstrates use of a rail-mounted high-frequency ultrasound probe to perform echocardiography on an anesthetized mouse. The methods describe both conventional two-dimensional and M-mode measurements of cardiac function in addition to newer, more powerful tools such as color Doppler, strain analysis, as well as general and targeted contrast imaging.

Source: Amelia R. Adelsperger, Evan H. Phillips, and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana High-frequency ultrasound systems are used to acquire high resolution images. Here, the use of a state-of-the-art system will be demonstrated to image the morphology and hemodynamics of small pulsatile arteries and veins found in mice and rats. Ultrasound is a relatively inexpensive, portable, and versatile method for the noninvasive...
