Dynamic Similarity

Dynamic similarity is the condition in which a model and its full-scale prototype experience equivalent ratios of governing forces, allowing the model’s behavior to represent the real system. Engineers achieve it by matching relevant dimensionless parameters, such as the Reynolds, Froude, Mach, or Weber numbers, so effects from inertia, viscosity, gravity, compressibility, or surface tension remain proportionally consistent. This principle supports physical model testing in fluid mechanics, aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering, including studies of aircraft, ships, bridges, turbines, and hydraulic structures. Dynamic similarity helps researchers predict prototype performance, identify design limitations, and reduce the cost and risk of full-scale experiments.

The similarity-dissimilarity effect, a fundamental concept in social psychology, explains how interpersonal similarities and differences influence attraction and social interactions. This effect is supported by three key psychological perspectives: balance theory, social comparison theory, and consensual validation.Balance Theory and Cognitive ConsistencyBalance theory, developed by Fritz Heider, posits that individuals seek cognitive consistency in their relationships. When two people share...

Factors Influencing Attraction III: Similarity

2025

The similarity hypothesis suggests that individuals are more likely to form relationships with others who share similar attitudes, beliefs, values, and interests. This concept has been widely studied in social psychology, demonstrating that perceived similarity fosters interpersonal attraction. In an experiment supporting this hypothesis, participants were presented with fabricated information indicating that strangers held attitudes similar to their own. The results showed that participants...

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA It is rare nowadays that a whole year goes by without a major earthquake event wreaking havoc somewhere around the world. In some cases, like the 2005 Banda Ache earthquake in Indonesia, the damage involved large geographic areas and casualties in the six figures. In general, the number and intensity of earthquakes is not increasing, however, the vulnerability of the built environment is...
