Feature Ablation

Feature ablation is a systematic method for determining how much individual inputs or components contribute to a model, system, or engineered design. Engineers remove, mask, or disable one feature at a time, then compare performance with the complete system using measures such as accuracy, error, efficiency, or reliability while holding other conditions constant. This controlled comparison helps identify influential variables, redundant sensors, and interactions among system elements, supporting model interpretation, feature selection, and design optimization. In machine learning and engineering analysis, feature ablation can also reveal weaknesses, guide data collection, and improve system robustness by showing which information or components are essential to successful operation.

Source: Muto, A., et al. Ablation of a Neuronal Population Using a Two-photon Laser and Its Assessment Using Calcium Imaging and Behavioral Recording in Zebrafish Larvae. J. Vis. Exp. (2018) In this video, a two-photon laser ablation procedure is demonstrated, enabling the selective destruction of fluorescent neurons in agarose-immobilized zebrafish larvae. High-resolution imaging before and after the procedure confirms efficient neuronal damage, as observed by the absence of fluorescence.

Visual Search for Features and Conjunctions

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University How do people find objects in cluttered visual scenes? Think, for example, of looking for keys on a messy desk, finding the ripest-looking fruit at the grocery store, locating your car when you can’t quite remember where you parked it, or finding an old friend at an airport exit gate. Clearly, an understanding of visual perception is going to play a role in any answers, and more specifically, an understanding of visual attention...
