Fiber Laser Engraving

Fiber laser engraving is a precision marking technique that uses a laser generated and amplified within an optical fiber to create durable patterns, text, or codes on a material’s surface. The fiber is doped with rare-earth elements that support stimulated emission, while a focused beam selectively heats the workpiece, producing ablation, melting, or controlled discoloration according to the material and processing settings. In engineering, this noncontact method supports part identification, traceability, serialization, and component decoration across metals, plastics, and other manufactured materials. Its accuracy, repeatability, and compatibility with automated production make it valuable for industrial fabrication and quality control.

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.

2017

A methodology is described herein for representing anatomical imaging data within crystals. We create scaled three-dimensional models of biomedical imaging data for use in Sub-Surface Laser Engraving (SSLE) of crystal glass. This tool offers a useful complement to computational display or three-dimensionally printed models used within clinical or educational settings.

We describe a technique for inscribing identical fiber Bragg gratings into each core of a multicore fiber. This is achieved by introducing an additional surface into the optical path to mitigate lensing by the curved surface of the fiber cladding.

In Vivo Single-Fiber Recording of Sciatic Nerve C-Fibers in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates a single-fiber recording of C-fiber nerve conduction in rats. An anesthetized rat is incised to expose the sciatic nerve, which provides sensory and motor supply to the lower limbs. The individual C-fibers are then exposed. Electrical stimulation is provided using stimulus electrodes implanted in the foot, and a response is recorded from a single nerve fiber.
