Forward Path Gain

Forward path gain is the amplification or transfer function from a feedback system’s input summing point to its output, before the feedback signal returns. It is determined by the cascaded gains and dynamic elements in the forward path, such as amplifiers, filters, motors, or process models, and may vary with frequency when represented as G(s). Combined with the feedback-path transfer function H(s), it forms the loop gain G(s)H(s), which influences closed-loop gain, stability, bandwidth, and transient response. Engineers use forward path gain to model and design control systems, evaluate frequency response, and tune controllers for accurate, stable operation.

Mean free path and Mean free time

Consider the gas molecules in a cylinder. They move in a random motion as they collide with each other and change speed and direction. The average of all the path lengths between collisions is known as the "mean free path." The mean free path varies inversely with the density of the molecules because when there are more molecules inside a volume, they have a greater chance of colliding with each other, thus reducing the mean free path. Additionally, the mean free path is inversely related to...

Gains from Acquisition: Synergy

Synergies in corporate acquisitions represent the additional value generated when two companies combine, exceeding the sum of their independent contributions. These synergies typically arise from cost efficiencies, revenue growth, and strategic advantages. Financially, synergy is measured as the Net Present Value (NPV) of future benefits minus integration costs, reflecting the post-acquisition increase in value. Cost synergies are achieved by streamlining operations, eliminating redundancies,...

Consider the two thermodynamic processes involving an ideal gas that are represented by paths AC and ABC in Figure 1: In the first process for path A to C, the gas is kept at constant temperature T. It undergoes an expansion from volume V1 to V2. The work done by an ideal gas is expressed as Substituting for pressure as nRT/V from the ideal gas equation and integrating the terms, the work done by an ideal gas at constant temperature is obtained as In the second process, for path A to B, the...

Gain and phase shift are properties of linear circuits that describe the effect a circuit has on a sinusoidal input voltage or current. The circuit's behavior that contains reactive elements will depend on the frequency of the input sinusoid. As a result, it is observed that the gain and phase shift will all be frequency functions. Gain: Suppose Vin is the input and Vout is the output signal to a circuit. The input and output signals have the amplitude A and B and a phase angle of 0° and θ°,...
