Harmonic Function Representation

Harmonic function representation is a mathematical framework for expressing functions that satisfy Laplace’s equation, a central tool for modeling fields with no internal sources or sinks. In engineering, boundary values determine these solutions, which can be constructed using methods such as Fourier series, Green’s functions, or harmonic expansions, depending on geometry and boundary conditions. This representation converts complex spatial behavior into tractable mathematical components and supports analysis of steady-state temperature, electrostatic potential, fluid flow, and related field problems. It also provides a foundation for numerical methods and system modeling, helping engineers predict field distributions and evaluate how boundaries influence physical performance.

This protocol presents a step-by-step guide for the Simultaneous Label-free Autofluorescence Multi-harmonic (SLAM) microscopic technique, including details on how to generate the laser light source, prepare a tissue sample, conduct imaging, and analyze the data. SLAM advances nonlinear microscopy by measuring four complementary label-free contrasts to investigate the tissue microenvironment.

Harmonic Mean

The arithmetic mean is usually skewed towards the larger values in the data set. Therefore, to avoid this inherent bias towards smaller values, the harmonic mean is used. Take the example of the speed of a car, which is the measure of the rate of distance traveled. If the vehicle traverses the same distance back-and-forth, its average speed equals the total distance traveled divided by the total time taken. However, if the car moves with varying speeds, then the arithmetic mean is more skewed...

State Space Representation

The frequency-domain technique, commonly used in analyzing and designing feedback control systems, is effective for linear, time-invariant systems. However, it falls short when dealing with nonlinear, time-varying, and multiple-input multiple-output systems. The time-domain or state-space approach addresses these limitations by utilizing state variables to construct simultaneous, first-order differential equations, known as state equations, for an nth-order system. Consider an RLC circuit, a...
