Machine Fault Detection

Machine fault detection is the engineering practice of identifying abnormal conditions in equipment before they cause failure, unsafe operation, or costly downtime. It works by collecting signals such as vibration, temperature, pressure, current, or acoustic emissions, then comparing measured patterns with baseline behavior through signal processing, threshold analysis, or machine-learning models. These methods can reveal developing defects in bearings, motors, pumps, gearboxes, and other mechanical or electrical systems. By supporting condition monitoring and predictive maintenance, machine fault detection helps engineers schedule repairs, improve reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and protect personnel, while also enabling more efficient and autonomous industrial operations.

When analyzing a single line-to-ground fault from phase A to ground at a three-phase bus, it is important to consider the fault impedance. This impedance is zero for a bolted fault, equal to the arc impedance for an arcing fault, and represents the total fault impedance for a transmission-line insulator flashover. To derive sequence and phase currents, fault conditions are translated from the phase domain to the sequence domain. For line-to-line faults occurring between phases B and C, the...

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Variable frequency drives (VFDs) are a type of adjustable speed drive, which are becoming standard equipment to power most AC induction motors. VFDs are common in industrial and automation applications and typically provide robust control of the motor in speed, torque, or position modes. The VFDs tested and simulated in this experiment focus on speed and open-loop control with constant voltage to...

Asthma Detection Research Based on Voice Signal Processing and Machine Learning

This study employed voice signal analysis and machine learning methods, utilizing MATLAB to extract distinctive voice features for non-invasive early detection of asthma. The Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) algorithms demonstrated comparable performance in terms of overall classification accuracy, although SVM may achieve a better balance between sensitivity and specificity.

AC Synchronous Machine Synchronization

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous generators are the main source of electrical power worldwide. They require a prime mover and an exciter in order to generate power. The prime mover can be a turbine spun by fluid (gas or liquid), thus the sources of the fluid can be water running off a dam through a long nozzle, steam from water evaporated using burned coal, etc. Most power plants including coal,...
