Physics Forces

Physics forces are interactions that can change an object's motion or shape, making them fundamental to analyzing how physical systems behave. A force arises through contact or at a distance and is described by magnitude and direction; according to Newton’s second law, the net force on an object produces acceleration proportional to its mass, while balanced forces produce equilibrium. In engineering, force analysis combines free-body diagrams, vector addition, and material or structural models to predict loads, stresses, motion, and stability. These principles guide the design and testing of bridges, machines, vehicles, and control systems, helping engineers improve safety, efficiency, and reliability.

Intermolecular Forces and Physical Properties

2025

Intermolecular forces are attractive forces that exist between molecules. They dictate several bulk properties, such as melting points, boiling points, and solubilities (miscibilities) of substances. For example, a high-boiling-point liquid, like water (H2O, b.p. 100 °C), exhibits stronger intermolecular forces compared to a low-boiling-point liquid, like hexane (C6H14, b.p. 68.73 °C). The three kinds of intermolecular interactions include i) ion–dipole forces, ii) dipole–dipole interactions,...

Source: Nicholas Timmons, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA The goal of this experiment is to understand the components of force and their relation to motion through the use of Newton's second law by measuring the acceleration of a glider being acted upon by a force. Nearly every aspect of motion in everyday life can be described using Isaac Newton's three laws of motion. They describe how objects in...

Electromotive Force

Electricity is generated by either electrons or ions flowing through a solution or a conducting medium. This flow of electrons or specifically electrical charge is defined as an electric current. When electrons move through a wire, they generate an electric current. It can be recalled that in a redox reaction, electrons are lost and gained. In the spontaneous redox reaction of zinc with copper, when zinc is immersed in a copper ion solution, a transfer of electrons from one substance to...
