Shape Retention

Shape retention is the ability of a material or engineered structure to preserve its intended geometry after forming, loading, or environmental exposure. It depends on the balance between elastic recovery and permanent deformation, with factors such as stiffness, yield strength, viscoelastic behavior, temperature, and moisture influencing whether the material returns to or departs from its original form. Engineers evaluate shape retention through controlled mechanical or environmental testing to guide the design of polymers, composites, textiles, biomedical devices, and precision components. Improving this property can enhance dimensional stability, service life, performance reliability, and manufacturing consistency.

Determination of the Calcium Retention Capacity of Isolated Mitochondria

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure to assess mitochondrial calcium retention capacity by monitoring real-time changes in fluorescence as mitochondria uptake calcium. This assay is useful for studying mitochondrial function and calcium-related processes, including apoptosis and neurodegenerative diseases.

Molecular Shape and Polarity

2020

Dipole Moment of a Molecule Polar covalent bonds connect two atoms with differing electronegativities, leaving one atom with a partial positive charge (δ+) and the other atom with a partial negative charge (δ–), as the electrons are pulled toward the more electronegative atom. This separation of charge gives rise to a bond dipole moment. The magnitude of a bond dipole moment is represented by the Greek letter mu (µ) and is given by the formula shown here, where Q is the magnitude of the...

Morphometric Analyses of Shape: The Analysis Software Toolbox for Craniofacial Shape Quantification in Zebrafish

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.

Ferromagnetic Bare Metal Stent for Endothelial Cell Capture and Retention

Our goals were to design, manufacture and test ferromagnetic stents for endothelial cell capture. Ten stents were tested for fracture and 10 more stents were tested for retained magnetism. Finally, 10 stents were tested in-vitro and 8 more stents were implanted in 4 pigs to show cell capture and retention.
