Thermal Diffusivity Measurement

Thermal diffusivity measurement determines how quickly a material transmits a temperature change, a property that governs its response to transient heating and cooling. In engineering, the measurement typically applies a controlled heat pulse to one surface and records the temperature rise on the opposite surface; diffusivity is then calculated from the heat-transfer time and specimen dimensions, often alongside thermal conductivity, density, and specific heat. These data support the design and evaluation of insulation, heat exchangers, electronic components, energy systems, and thermal barrier materials. Accurate measurements help predict temperature gradients, prevent overheating, and improve material selection and thermal-management strategies.

2023

Source: Elise S.D. Buki, Danielle N. Beatty, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT The laser flash method (LFA) is a technique used to measure thermal diffusivity, a material specific property. Thermal diffusivity (α) is the ratio of how much heat is conducted relative to how much heat is stored in a material. It is related to thermal conductivity (), how much heat is transferred through a material due to a temperature...

In this article we will describe the procedure for measuring diffusion coefficients using multi-photon fluorescence recovery after photobleaching. We will begin by aligning the laser along the optical path to the sample and determining the proper experimental parameters, then continue generating and finally fitting fluorescence recovery curves.
