Breaking Bud Pollination

Breaking bud pollination is a controlled plant-breeding technique in which an unopened flower bud is opened so pollen can be placed on the receptive stigma before natural flowering and uncontrolled pollen transfer occur. By working at this early stage, researchers can manage the timing and parentage of fertilization while limiting interference from other pollinators or nearby plants. The method supports controlled crosses, hybrid production, and studies of reproductive biology, including how floral development and pollinator access influence seed formation. In environmental research, it can help assess plant reproductive success and genetic exchange under changing ecological conditions.

Pollination and Flower Structure

2020

Flowers are the reproductive, seed-producing structures of angiosperms. Typically, flowers consist of sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels. Sepals and petals are the vegetative flower organs. Stamens and carpels are the reproductive organs. Flowers must be pollinated to produce seeds. In angiosperms, pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther of the stamen (the male structure) to the stigma of the carpel (the female structure). Flowers may be self-pollinated or cross-pollinated.

2016

To reveal the pollinator effectiveness of a given plant species, multiple methods of field experiments have been developed. This study demonstrates the basic methods of field experiments for pollination ecology using the case study of Lycoris sanguinea var. sanguinea and the novel pollination mechanism, breaking-bud pollination.

The “Break-Even” Point

The macroeconomic consumption function illustrates the relationship between aggregate consumption (C) and national income (Y). It is typically expressed as:C = a + bYwhere a denotes autonomous consumption—expenditures that occur regardless of income—and b, the marginal propensity to consume (MPC), indicates the fraction of additional income that is spent. The break-even point occurs where:C = YSolving for income yields the break-even level of national income:At this level, the entire output...

Fixing Double-strand Breaks

2020

The double-stranded structure of DNA has two major advantages. First, it serves as a safe repository of genetic information where one strand serves as the back-up in case the other strand is damaged. Second, the double-helical structure can be wrapped around proteins called histones to form nucleosomes, which can then be tightly wound to form chromosomes. This way, DNA chains up to 2 inches long can be contained within microscopic structures in a cell. A double-stranded break not only damages...

Break-Even Analysis

2026

Break-even analysis is a managerial accounting technique used to determine the level of sales at which total revenue equals total costs. At the break-even point, a business neither earns a profit nor incurs a loss because all fixed and variable costs are fully recovered. This analysis is widely used in planning, budgeting, pricing, and evaluating the financial feasibility of new products, projects, or business operations. The break-even point depends on three key factors: selling price per unit,...
