Particulate Compounds

Particulate compounds are chemical substances present as suspended solid particles or liquid droplets, rather than solely as dissolved or gaseous molecules, and they influence environmental quality and transport. They form through processes such as combustion, condensation, mineral weathering, biological activity, and chemical reactions; once released, their size, surface properties, and composition govern aggregation, adsorption of other substances, movement through air or water, and deposition onto soils and surfaces. Studying particulate compounds supports air- and water-quality monitoring, pollution-source assessment, and evaluation of ecological and human-health impacts, while also improving understanding of atmospheric chemistry, contaminant transport, and environmental change.

We introduce the VacuSIP, a simple, non-intrusive, and reliable method for clean and accurate point sampling of water. The system was developed and evaluated for the simultaneous collection of the water inhaled and exhaled by benthic suspension feeders in situ, to cleanly measure removal and excretion of particulate and dissolved compounds.

Purifying Compounds by Recrystallization

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Jimmy Franco - Merrimack College Recrystallization is a technique used to purify solid compounds.1 Solids tend to be more soluble in hot liquids than in cold liquids. During recrystallization, an impure solid compound is dissolved in a hot liquid until the solution is saturated, and then the liquid is allowed to cool.2 The compound should then form relatively pure crystals. Ideally, any impurities that are present will remain in the solution and will not be...
