Laboratory-based Pcr

Laboratory-based PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a molecular technique that selectively amplifies a target DNA sequence, making small amounts of genetic material measurable for research and environmental monitoring. In repeated thermal cycles, heat separates DNA strands, primers bind to complementary target regions during cooling, and a thermostable DNA polymerase extends the primers to generate exponentially more copies. Researchers use PCR to detect microorganisms and pathogens in water, soil, and sediment, identify environmental DNA, and assess changes in microbial communities. The method supports biodiversity surveys, contamination assessment, and ecosystem studies, although careful sampling and controls are essential to distinguish true signals from contamination or amplification bias.
