Spatial Gradients

Spatial gradients are systematic changes in an environmental property, such as temperature, light, moisture, nutrient concentration, or pollution, across a defined area. They arise when sources, sinks, transport processes, and landscape features create uneven conditions, while diffusion, advection, and biological uptake shape how sharply those conditions vary with distance. Measuring spatial gradients helps researchers identify ecological niches, trace contaminant movement, assess habitat quality, and predict how organisms and ecosystems respond to environmental change. Mapping these patterns with field sampling, remote sensing, or spatial models also supports conservation planning and environmental management.

Density Gradient Ultracentrifugation

2023

Density gradient ultracentrifugation is a common technique used to isolate and purify biomolecules and cell structures. This technique exploits the fact that, in suspension, particles that are more dense than the solvent will sediment, while those that are less dense will float. A high-speed ultracentrifuge is used to accelerate this process in order to separate biomolecules within a density gradient, which can be established by layering liquids of decreasing density in a centrifuge tube. The...

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Attention refers to the limited human ability to select some information for processing at the expense of other stimuli in the environment. Attention operates in all sensory modalities: vision, hearing, touch, even taste and smell. It is most often studied in the visual domain though. A common way to study visual attention is with a spatial cueing paradigm. This paradigm allows researchers to measure the consequences of focusing...

Purification of Bacteriophages Using a Sucrose Density Gradient

Source: Rustad, M., et.al. Synthesis of Infectious Bacteriophages in an E. coli-based Cell-free Expression System. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the purification of bacteriophages from a suspension containing host bacterial debris using a sucrose density gradient. It shows how the density gradient separates phages by buoyant density, enabling recovery of a visible band for resuspension and further analysis.

2013

The gradient echo memory is a protocol for storing optical quantum states of light in atomic ensembles. Quantum memory is a key element of a quantum repeater, which can extend the range of quantum key distribution. We outline the operation of the scheme when implemented in a 3-level atomic ensemble.
