Sub-millimeter Resolution

Sub-millimeter resolution is the ability of an imaging or measurement system to distinguish environmental features smaller than one millimeter, revealing fine-scale structure that coarser observations miss. It depends on spatial sampling, signal quality, optics or sensor geometry, and calibration, which together determine the smallest separable detail under specific measurement conditions. In environmental research, this resolution can characterize surface texture, sediment or soil structure, small organisms, particles, and narrow spatial gradients, improving measurements of habitat, transport, erosion, and other localized processes. It also supports model validation and comparison of environmental changes over time.

Optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) is an emerging technology capable of imaging optical absorption contrasts in vivo with cellular resolution and sensitivity. Here, we provide a visualized instruction on the experimental protocols of OR-PAM, including system configuration, system alignment, typical in vivo experimental procedures, and functional imaging schemes.

Chromatographic Resolution

In chromatography, a solute moves through a chromatographic column and tends to spread, forming a Gaussian-shaped band. The longer the solute spends in the column, the broader the band becomes. The broadening can lead to overlaps within the column, affecting separation effectiveness. The effectiveness of separation can be evaluated by determining the level of separation between two neighboring peaks in a chromatogram, which represents the individual components of a sample. In chromatography,...
