Spectral Karyotyping

Spectral karyotyping is a cytogenetic technique that visualizes and identifies all human chromosomes by assigning each one a distinct fluorescent color, making complex chromosomal abnormalities easier to detect. It uses mixtures of chromosome-specific fluorescent probes that hybridize to chromosome DNA, followed by spectral imaging, which separates overlapping emission signals and converts them into a characteristic color for each chromosome. In genetics, this method helps reveal translocations, insertions, deletions, marker chromosomes, and other rearrangements that conventional G-banding may miss. Spectral karyotyping supports cancer cytogenetics, prenatal and clinical diagnosis, and research on genome instability and chromosome structure.

Spectral Karyotyping (SKY) is an advanced cytogenetics technique to identify genomic and chromosomal aberrations. This technique takes advantage of chromosome painting probes, which allow classification of all chromosomes. SKY can also identify complex chromosome aberrations and segregation defects in mice and humans with various diseases, including polycystic kidney disease.
