Time Trace Analysis

Time trace analysis is the examination of a measured signal or biological variable across time to identify patterns, changes, and relationships that a single observation cannot reveal. In genetics, researchers collect sequential measurements, plot them against time, and analyze features such as increases, decreases, oscillations, delays, and response rates, often using normalization and quantitative modeling. This approach can characterize the timing of gene expression, monitor genetic or cellular responses to experimental conditions, and distinguish transient effects from sustained changes. By preserving temporal information, time trace analysis supports more precise interpretation of dynamic biological processes and improves the design and analysis of genetic experiments.

A protocol to perform lineage tracing and functional genetic analysis of candidate genes at a single cell level using mosaic analysis with double markers (MADM) is presented. MADM clonal analysis provides a quantitative framework to measure the proliferative behavior, cellular output, and lineage relationship of individual progenitors and their daughter cells.
