Animal Cohort Reduction

Animal cohort reduction is the planned use of fewer animals in a study while preserving the reliability and interpretability of its results, an important principle of responsible biomedical research. In immunology and infection studies, researchers achieve this through statistical power analysis, efficient experimental design, shared controls, repeated measurements, and longitudinal sampling, which extract more information from each animal and reduce unnecessary duplication. These approaches can limit animal use while maintaining robust assessment of immune responses, pathogen burden, disease progression, and treatment effects. Effective cohort reduction supports the 3Rs framework, improves resource efficiency, and strengthens the ethical and scientific basis of infection research.

Oxidation-Reduction Reactions

Oxidation–Reduction Reactions Earth’s atmosphere contains about 20% molecular oxygen, O2, a chemically reactive gas that plays an essential role in the metabolism of aerobic organisms and in many environmental processes that shape the world. The term oxidation was originally used to describe chemical reactions involving O2, but its meaning has evolved to refer to a broad and important reaction class known as oxidation–reduction (redox) reactions. Some redox reactions involve the transfer of...

The 3Rs Principle in Animal Research

All procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC, and must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement. The principles of Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement, commonly called the 3Rs, establish the ethical basis for the use of animals in scientific research. Developed by Russell and Burch in 1959, these principles are included in institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC)...

Stereotaxic surgery on rodents allows for targeted administration of drugs or electrical stimulation and recordings in awake, behaving animals. In this video presentation we will demonstrate recent procedural refinements to this long-standing procedure that successfully improved survival rate and reduced post-surgical weight loss.

A Reduction of Uncertainty

Lease contracts are essential in reducing financial uncertainties that could impact a firm’s stability. One significant uncertainty is the residual value of an asset at the end of its lease term or useful life. The residual value represents the estimated worth of an asset upon disposal, which can fluctuate due to market conditions and technological changes.By assuming residual value risk, lessors leverage their asset valuation and resale expertise to manage depreciation and market fluctuations.
