Beta Hairpin Structure

A beta hairpin structure is a protein motif in which two neighboring beta strands run in opposite directions and are connected by a tight turn, creating a compact fold with important roles in molecular recognition and stability. Hydrogen bonds between peptide backbones stabilize the paired strands, while the connecting loop reverses the polypeptide chain and can help position functional side chains. In immunology and infection research, beta hairpins contribute to the structure of antimicrobial peptides, including defensins, and appear in pathogen proteins that interact with host cells. Characterizing these motifs helps clarify peptide activity, immune defense, virulence, and opportunities for therapeutic design.

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...

The video demonstrates a procedure for preparing human cortical brain slices from Alzheimer's disease patients for analyzing the deposition of amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides using Matrix-assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Imaging Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-IMS). The steps include preparing the slides, treating the tissue to enhance ionization, and analyzing the spatial distribution of amyloid-beta peptides.

A Tailored HPLC Purification Protocol That Yields High-purity Amyloid Beta 42 and Amyloid Beta 40 Peptides, Capable of Oligomer Formation

Herein we report a tailored HPLC purification protocol that yields high-purity amyloid beta 42 (Aβ42) and amyloid beta 40 (Aβ40) peptides, capable of oligomer formation. Amyloid beta is a highly aggregation prone, hydrophobic peptide implicated in Alzheimer's disease. The amyloidogenic nature of the peptide makes its purification a challenge.
