Gitr Costimulation

GITR costimulation is an immune-regulatory process in which signaling through the glucocorticoid-induced TNFR-related protein (GITR) alters T-cell activation and function. When GITR on T cells binds its ligand, GITRL, the resulting tumor necrosis factor receptor family signal can enhance antigen receptor-driven responses in conventional T cells while modifying the suppressive activity and stability of regulatory T cells. This pathway helps shape the balance between protective immunity and immune tolerance during infection and inflammation. Because GITR signaling can influence pathogen control and tissue damage, it is also studied as a potential target for immunotherapies and immune-modulating treatments.
