Suit Donning

Suit donning is the systematic process of putting on protective clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) to create a barrier against infectious agents and hazardous biological materials. It typically involves hand hygiene followed by correctly fitting items such as a protective suit or gown, respirator, eye protection, gloves, and boots, while minimizing contact with potentially contaminated surfaces and maintaining appropriate coverage. In immunology and infection research, standardized donning procedures help protect laboratory personnel, patients, and experimental samples from exposure or cross-contamination. Consistent technique supports biosafety, infection-control practices, and reliable work in clinical, diagnostic, and research environments.

Although researchers are generally knowledgeable about procedures and safety precautions required for biosafety level 1 or 2 (BSL-1/2) experiments, they may not be familiar with experimental procedures in BSL-4 suit laboratories. This article provides a detailed visual demonstration of BSL-4 suit laboratory systems check, laboratory entry, movement, and exit procedures.

COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak: Donning Personal Protective Equipment Before Entering A Patient Room

2020

In pandemic times, medical staff is becoming a key resource in fighting the infection. To achieve the best medical care, relevant techniques and procedures have to be taught to medical staff to reduce the risk of infection. In this video the donning of personal protective gear prior to treating COVID-19 patients is shown. A technique to reuse protective facemasks in shortage of supplies is also...

PPE Use in Healthcare Settings I: Donning

2023

Donning PPE must be completed before contact with the patient. This process protects from infectious agents. The sequence and action included in each donning are critical, and the steps must be systematic to avoid exposure to pathogens. The institutional policy also needs to be followed while donning PPE. The pre-donning preparations are gathering equipment, inspecting the PPE equipment for tears, holes, or damage, removing jewelry, removing any garments below the elbows, and tying the hair...

A Platform of Anti-biofilm Assays Suited to the Exploration of Natural Compound Libraries

Biofilm infections show high tolerance towards chemotherapy. No single assay captures the complexity of biofilms. Instead, complementary assays are needed. We present a screening platform (developed for S. aureus) that combines assays for viability, biomass, and biofilm matrix. It allows anti-biofilm drug discovery, including the assessment of long-term chemotherapeutic effects.

Transcriptomic Analysis of C. elegans RNA Sequencing Data Through the Tuxedo Suite on the Galaxy Project

Galaxy and DAVID have emerged as popular tools that allow investigators without bioinformatics training to analyze and interpret RNA-Seq data. We describe a protocol for C. elegans researchers to perform RNA-Seq experiments, access and process the dataset using Galaxy and obtain meaningful biological information from the gene lists using DAVID.
