Real-world Modeling

Real-world modeling is the process of representing practical situations with mathematical structures so their behavior can be analyzed, explained, or predicted. Modelers translate observations, measurements, and relationships into variables, equations, functions, graphs, or simulations, while stating assumptions and simplifying complex systems. In mathematics, these models support decisions in areas such as population change, finance, engineering, environmental science, and public health by testing scenarios and estimating outcomes. Comparing model predictions with observed data helps assess accuracy, refine assumptions, and identify limitations, making real-world modeling an essential link between abstract mathematical reasoning and evidence-based problem solving.

Source: Valentine, M. E., et al., Generation of In-Frame Gene Deletion Mutants in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Testing for Virulence Attenuation in a Simple Mouse Model of Infection. J. Vis. Exp. (2020)This video demonstrates the use of a bioluminescence-based imaging approach to monitor bacterial infection in a live mouse model. Sequential bioluminescent and X-ray imaging enables real-time visualization and anatomical localization of infection spread throughout the host.

Implanting an On-Head Electrode System in a Rat Model for Real-Time Seizure Detection

Retraining abnormal movement patterns following injury or disease is a key component of physical rehabilitation. Recent advances in technology have permitted accurate assessment of movement during a variety of tasks, with near instantaneous quantification of results. This provides new opportunities for modification of faulty movement patterns in real time.
