Vertical Change

Vertical change is the difference in height between two points, positions, or values on a graph, making it a fundamental way to describe how a quantity changes along the vertical axis. In coordinate geometry, it is calculated by subtracting the initial y-value from the final y-value, written as Δy = y₂ − y₁; this value represents the graph’s rise and may be positive, negative, or zero. Vertical change is used with horizontal change to determine slope, analyze linear relationships, interpret rates of change, and model patterns in mathematics, science, economics, and other quantitative fields.

Vertical Line Test

A function is a fundamental mathematical relationship in which every valid input corresponds to exactly one unique output. When analyzing mathematical relationships on a coordinate plane, the vertical line test provides a straightforward geometric criterion for determining whether a graph represents a function. According to this rule, a graph depicts a function if and only if no vertical line intersects the curve at more than one point. If a vertical line crosses a graph at multiple points, it...

Vertical Asymptote

2026

A vertical asymptote is a vertical line on a graph that a function approaches but never touches or crosses as its input value gets arbitrarily close to a specific point. In rational functions, vertical asymptotes typically occur at x-values that cause the denominator to equal zero, provided those zero-inducing factors do not cancel with terms in the numerator. At these critical values, the function becomes undefined, leading to dramatic boundary behavior where output values grow without bound...

Melting Land and Sea Ice ExpandNOTE: This activity is a simulation of land- and sea-ice melting and their effects on water levels. First, label one graduated cylinder as 'Sea Ice' and the other graduated cylinder as 'Land Ice.' Hypotheses: the experimental hypothesis might be that the land ice melting will cause the water level to rise more than the melting sea ice. The null hypothesis would be that there will be no difference in the change in water level between the two containers. Add 10 ice...

Climate Change - Concepts

The certainty of climate change remains a public controversy despite the consensus among approximately 97% of active climate researchers, who not only agree that the Earth’s climate is changing but also state that this change is intensified by human activity, predominantly carbon emissions 1. The disconnect between the public and the experts is partly due to poor understanding of the mechanisms involved in climate change as well as the differences among essential concepts such as weather and...

Vertical Marketing Systems

A Vertical Marketing System (VMS) is the distribution channel arrangement in which producers, wholesalers, and retailers collaborate as a unified system with the goal of enhancing efficiency and effectiveness. This organizational structure allows for better coordination and collaboration between different entities, resulting in increased cost efficiency and economies of scale. There are three main types of VMS: corporate, contractual, and administrative. Each type has its own unique...
