Clinical Workflow Simulation

Clinical workflow simulation is the structured modeling or rehearsal of how patients, healthcare professionals, information, and resources move through a care process. It represents sequential tasks, decision points, communication steps, and timing under realistic or controlled conditions, allowing teams to test how changes affect workflow before implementation. In medicine, simulations can evaluate patient flow, clinical handoffs, staffing, electronic health record use, and responses to high-risk events without exposing patients to added risk. The results reveal bottlenecks, coordination failures, and safety hazards, supporting process redesign, team training, quality improvement, and more efficient delivery of care.

Integrating Automated Simulation Workflows with 3D Visualization for Virtual Experiments in the Metaverse

2026

A generalized, FAIR-compliant method is presented for domain-expert researchers seeking to integrate simulation and data-processing tools into automated workflows for 3D virtual experiments. A neutronics example demonstrates setting up a local Galaxy instance, wrapping OpenMC and file-conversion tools, launching workflows from Omniverse, and visualizing the converted 3D outputs.

A Model to Simulate Clinically Relevant Hypoxia in Humans

Hypoxia simulation in humans has usually been performed by inhaling hypoxic gas mixtures. For this study, apneic divers were used to simulate dynamic hypoxia in humans. Additionally, physiological changes in desaturation and re-saturation kinetics were evaluated with non-invasive tools such as Near-Infrared-Spectroscopy (NIRS) and peripheral oxygenation saturation (SpO2).

Here, we present a protocol to enable whole-genome sequencing of bacterial sexually transmitted infections from clinical samples using target enrichment. This novel, syndromic panel-based method overcomes challenges of abundant human DNA and low bacterial loads, facilitating genomic surveillance for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Treponema pallidum, and Mycoplasma genitalium.

2012

Patients with visual deficits after stroke report about different constraints in daily life most likely due to variable compensatory strategies, which are difficult to differentiate in clinical routine. We present a clinical set-up which allows measurement of different compensatory head- and eye-movement-strategies and evaluating their effects on driving performance.
