Cooney Wrist Score

The Cooney Wrist Score is a clinical assessment tool that summarizes wrist function after injury, disease, or treatment, helping clinicians quantify recovery and compare outcomes. It combines patient-reported pain and functional status with measured range of motion and grip strength, assigning points to each domain to produce an overall score, typically on a 0–100 scale. In medicine, the score supports evaluation of conditions such as distal radius fractures and other wrist disorders, guides follow-up, and helps assess the effectiveness of rehabilitation or surgery. Its standardized structure also facilitates communication and outcome comparisons in clinical research.

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The wrist is a complex joint made up of 8 carpal bones and their numerous articulations and ligaments. Overlying the wrist are the tendons and muscles of the hand and fingers. The hand is made up of 5 metacarpal bones, and the tendons that run to the hand overlie these bones. Finally, the fingers consist of 14 phalanges with their articulations held together by collateral ligaments and volar plates. Common mechanisms of...

Introduction to z Scores

2023

A z score (or standardized value) is measured in units of the standard deviation. It tells you how many standard deviations the value x is above (to the right of) or below (to the left of) the mean, μ. Values of x that are larger than the mean have positive z scores, and values of x that are smaller than the mean have negative z scores. If x equals the mean, then x has a zero z score. It is important to note that the mean of the z scores is zero, and the standard deviation is one. z scores help...

z scores are the standardized values obtained after converting a normal distribution into a standard normal distribution. A z score is measured in units of the standard deviation.
