Digital Dental Photography

Digital dental photography is the use of digital cameras and imaging accessories to record intraoral and extraoral structures for clinical documentation, diagnosis, and communication. A camera sensor converts reflected light from the teeth and surrounding tissues into digital data, while controlled lighting, focus, exposure, and color balance help produce clear, reproducible images; retractors and mirrors can improve access to specific areas. In medicine and dentistry, these photographs support treatment planning, monitoring of clinical changes, patient education, laboratory communication, and professional records. Standardized image capture also improves comparisons over time and can support teaching, consultation, and research.
