Family Participation

Family participation in medicine is the involvement of a patient’s relatives or chosen support network in communication, decision-making, caregiving, and care planning. With the patient’s consent, clinicians share relevant information, elicit family perspectives, clarify treatment goals, and coordinate responsibilities while respecting privacy, autonomy, and cultural values. This collaborative process can strengthen understanding of diagnoses and treatment options, support medication management and recovery, and improve continuity across hospital, outpatient, and home settings. Family participation is especially important when patients are children, older adults, critically ill, or unable to communicate their preferences independently.

Protein Families

2020

Protein families are groups of homologous proteins; that is, they have similarities in amino acid sequences and three-dimensional structures. Protein families usually occur because of gene duplication, where an additional copy of a gene is inserted into the genome of an organism. Mutations that change the amino acids but still allow the protein to be properly synthesized, will lead to new protein family members. If these new proteins contain similar amino acids in key locations, protein...

Gene Families

2020

Gene families consist of groups of genes proposed to have originated from a common ancestor. Typically these arise through events in which a gene or genes are mistakenly duplicated during cell division. Unlike their parent genes (which are subject to selection pressure to maintain function), these gene copies do not need to preserve their sequences and may evolve at a relatively faster rate. Occasionally these regions can be adapted to take on new roles within the organism, becoming novel genes...

2015

This paper describes how to use the emotional oddball task and fMRI to measure brain activation in children and adolescents at familial high risk for schizophrenia (FHR). FMRI was used to measure differences in fronto-striato-limbic regions during an emotional oddball task. Children with FHR exhibited abnormal functional activation during adolescence.
