Fever Like Conditions

Fever-like conditions are illnesses or physiological states that produce fever-associated symptoms, such as chills, sweating, fatigue, malaise, or a sensation of elevated body temperature, with or without a measured fever. True fever occurs when inflammatory mediators raise the hypothalamic temperature set point, whereas conditions such as hyperthermia, hormonal changes, medication effects, dehydration, or anxiety can increase heat production or alter heat loss without resetting that set point. Distinguishing these mechanisms requires careful assessment of temperature, exposure history, medications, associated symptoms, and vital signs. In medicine, this evaluation supports differential diagnosis, guides treatment, and helps identify infections or potentially urgent disorders requiring prompt care.

Types of Fever

2024

Fever can be triggered by several factors, including infections, nervous system disorders, certain cancers, blood diseases like leukemia, embolism, thrombosis, heatstroke, dehydration, surgical trauma, crushing injuries, and allergic reactions. Here are the different types of fever: • Rigor: This type of fever is characterized by a sudden and severe attack of shivering, during which body temperature quickly rises to hyperpyrexia levels. • Hyperthermia: Occurs when the body temperature...

Patterns of Fever

2024

Before understanding the types and patterns of fever, it is essential to know its phases. • The first stage is the onset/invasion phase, during which the body temperature rises. It might be a sudden or gradual process. • The second stage is the steady phase, during which the body temperature has reached its maximum and remains constant at a high level. • The third stage is the defervescence or decline phase, during which the elevated temperature returns to normal. The fever may subside...

Methods of reducing fever

The signs and symptoms of fever include hot and dry skin, flushed face, thirst, muscle aches, anorexia, headache, tachycardia, tachypnea, and fatigue. Elevated body temperature is reduced using two methods: pharmacological and nonpharmacological. Proper identification and treatment of the root cause of a fever is of utmost importance. Pharmacological Methods of Reducing Fever: Suppose a bacterial infection is the cause of fever. In that case, the healthcare provider obtains culture specimens...

Yellow Fever

2026

Yellow fever is a viral hemorrhagic disease caused by the yellow fever virus (YFV), a member of the Flaviviridae family. It is transmitted primarily by Aedes and Haemagogus mosquitoes in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and South America. After transmission through a mosquito bite, the virus initially replicates in skin-resident immune cells such as dendritic cells and macrophages. These cells then migrate to the lymph nodes, where viral replication increases, eventually leading to...

Building a Better Mosquito: Identifying the Genes Enabling Malaria and Dengue Fever Resistance in A. gambiae and A. aegypti Mosquitoes

2007

In this interview, George Dimopoulos focuses on the physiological mechanisms used by mosquitoes to combat Plasmodium falciparum and dengue virus infections. Explanation is given for how key refractory genes, those genes conferring resistance to vector pathogens, are identified in the mosquito and how this knowledge can be used to generate transgenic mosquitoes that are unable to carry the malaria parasite or dengue virus.
