Intraventricular Endoscopy

Intraventricular endoscopy is a minimally invasive neurosurgical technique that uses a small endoscope to visualize and treat disorders within the brain’s ventricular system. Inserted through a small cranial opening, the endoscope transmits images while working channels permit irrigation, tissue sampling, coagulation, or passage of specialized instruments; surgeons can also open obstructed cerebrospinal fluid pathways under direct vision. In medicine, this approach is commonly used to treat selected forms of hydrocephalus, including through endoscopic third ventriculostomy, and to biopsy or fenestrate intraventricular lesions such as cysts. By reducing the need for extensive open surgery, it can support targeted diagnosis and treatment, although patient selection and anatomical guidance remain essential.

Modeling Neonatal Intraventricular Hemorrhage Through Intraventricular Injection of Hemoglobin

2025

This video demonstrates a method to generate a rat model of neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage. In this procedure, an anesthetized rat pup is injected with hemoglobin into the lateral ventricle of the brain. The hemoglobin causes oxidative stress and releases heme, simulating intraventricular hemorrhage. The resulting damage to brain tissues, driven by reactive oxygen species and inflammatory cytokines, leads to ventricular enlargement, a common consequence of intraventricular hemorrhage.
