Lung Sliding

Lung sliding is the ultrasound appearance of the visceral and parietal pleura moving against each other during breathing, a finding that indicates apposition of the lung to the chest wall. On real-time imaging, respiratory motion produces a shimmering or sliding interface at the pleural line because the two pleural surfaces remain in contact as the thorax expands and contracts. In emergency and critical care medicine, clinicians use lung sliding in point-of-care ultrasound to assess causes of acute respiratory distress, particularly suspected pneumothorax, where its absence may suggest separation of the pleural layers by air. Interpretation should be integrated with other clinical and sonographic findings.

Design Example: Designing Water Slide

2025

When designing a water slide, controlling the speed of water flow is crucial for rider safety while maintaining an exciting experience. As water flows down the slide, gravity causes it to accelerate, with its speed at the bottom depending on the height from which it starts. The higher the slide, the more potential energy the water has at the top, which is converted into kinetic energy as it descends, increasing its speed. Bernoulli's principle determines the water's velocity along the slide.
